Domain After the Division of Two Functions

From the Math 30-1 Information Bulletin 2023-2024

Taken from the Alberta Education website:

“Students are able to determine the domain and range of a function after a transformation, but many students have difficulty determining the domain after the division of two functions”.

  • The domain of a quotient of functions is the domain common to both (overlap) f(x) and g(x).
  • The domain is further restricted by excluding values where g(x) = 0.
  • Visually representing the overlap, or common domain, on a graph can be useful.
