Slope and Rate of Change

Slope is the steepness of a line. If a line rises to the right, the slope is positive. If a line rises to the left, the slope is negative.

Slope is determined by the ratio of the rise to the run. The rise is the difference in the y-coordinates and the run is the difference in the x-coordinates.

When dealing with linear functions as we are doing here, the slope and rate of change are the same.
