Mature Student Preparing To Challenge Math Diploma

Introduction

High school students taking Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 will blend a classroom mark and a government diploma exam mark to arrive at a final grade. The teacher awarded mark is worth 70% and the diploma exam mark represents 30%. As the transition phase continues beyond the pandemic, a 2022-2023 diploma exam will be worth 20% of the final grade.

A mature student, for Alberta High School Diploma purposes, is one who, as of September 1 of the current school year, is:

  • 19 years of age or older; or
  • the holder of a previously awarded high school diploma from the province of Alberta, or an equivalent high school diploma from a jurisdiction acceptable to the Minister

As a mature student, you have the option to bypass formal course instruction and challenge a diploma exam to represent 100% of the final grade.

Course Companion

Assuming that you do not have the time or inclination to take the course as a mature student, finding a resource (course companion) to mirror the classroom experience without actually being the classroom, could be a huge advantage for many people.

A good course companion would have to cover all the general and specific outcomes embedded within the program of studies. It would have video lessons on every topic in the course. Having practice questions that reach both the acceptable standard and the standard of excellence would be very important. Having not just answers, but detailed solutions to the practice questions would enhance the learning process. Well crafted practice unit exams would provide excellent feedback on your level of understanding. Weaving all course outcomes within a comprehensive practice final exam would set the stage for tackling diploma questions that assess multiple outcomes. If you are the type of person who benefits from both seeing and hearing detailed solutions, a course companion providing this option would be invaluable. Since 25% of the assessment is based on 3 written response questions, a resource to guide and advise on effective response strategies would be critical.
